Shang La-Mantho La-Stok Kangri

Trek Code 3 :  Shang La-Mantho La-Stok Kangri Drive –cum-Trek

In the cold desert of ladakh each village stand out like an oasis. The availability of water determines the village’size.Channels of water designed generations ago still tap melted-water from the snows and bring it down to the fields. Animal husbandry supplements agriculture to complete the structure of the traditionl economy. Animal provide transport, labour, woll milk and dung, the main fuel. A ladakhi family spend the summer month with their sheep, goats, horses, yakes and dzos ( a hybrid between the local cow and yaks) The trek would make you experience a slice of ladakhi life, besides taking you through a couple of high passes and to the summit of 20,000-feet-plus(6000 m)

Duration 8/9days: Permits: A climbing permit, required for all peaks  over 19,700ft/6,000 m

( Best Time: June to sept.)  Getting there by air to leh or by road to Delhi, Chandigarh, Manali  to leh stay in hotel when arrive in ladhakh  relax for the day and explore the Himalaya the last leg

 Day 1.) A two- hour drive from leh  takes you to Martselang (11,200) ft/3,414 m) above the Indus valley. The trail criss-crosses the river through the narrow gorge. The trail climbs steadily as the valley turns south-west. Houses is Shang village cluster on a slope with the trail passing a little below. Life normally revolves around the dark kitchen-cum-dining room.we stay in the shang village

Day 2.)  Morning after breakfast we climb to the village is rewarded with a good view of the stone-walled field and irrigation channels, Going down the trail start climbing slowly as the valley narrows. The trail become steeper and going up this tributary and we reach at  shang La Base campsite at a junction of two valley

Day.3 ) After the breakfast, take the valley on the right from the junction where you had pitched camp the day before. Climb up past scrubs and wild rose bushes. The top of the Shang la 16,300 Ft/4,968m) It taks around thres and half hours form the pass, the views open up with the stok and Matho kagri Peaks. Matho basin followed by a gradual walk takes you to Gyang Poche(13,600 ft/4145m)

Day.4)  After breakfast , the trail stays height on the hillside. A three-Hour walk on the incline, crossing side streams, leads to the base of the Matho La (14,100)ft/4,297 m).As this has been a short day, you can go on a hike on the east slope of the Matho Kangri massif. Across the valley are the Ladakh range and the Khardug La, and beyond that the lofty mountains of the Eastern Karakorams. To the east you can hazily make out the Tibetan plateau.

Day.5) Early in the morning, after breakfast we move the steep climb to the pass beigns  just after the camp. On the pass (16,100 ft/4,907m), the Stok Kangri looms up. Leave the main valley and climb up westward to the left of the valley to base of stok Kangri (16,077 ft/4,900m) The camp is in a basin with a lovely view of teh massif of Gulep kangri is hidden behind a ridge.

Day.6) Take a much-needed rest before you try the summit of Stok kangri. In the mountaineering parlance, a trekking peak is the name given toa summit that does not require any technical knowledge for the climbing or any equipment for the ascent.But 20,506 ft/6,250 m does require fitness and stamina

Day.7) A long arduous walk awaits you. Start before the sun is up. Climb up,switchbacking to the top of the ridge in front Climb up over the moraine for an hour and then corss the glacier to reach a basin in another hour. Now you go to the east face over more loose rocks for four and half hour to reach the east ridge  From the top you get a magical360-degree view of the  whole ladakh- the twin peaks of the Nun(23,250ft/7,086m) and Kun(23,400 ft/7,132 m) To the east, the Karakorams to the north, the plains of the Changthang and the Tibetan Plateau to the west, and the Zanskar range to the south. Descend all the way back to base camp.

Day.8) After have a much needed rest and the nest day the trail follows the stok river down the Stok village.After the creaditble feat of scaling a peak, you may want to look at some local history at the Stok palace. Or may be you  can go back to leh and go to sleep in a hot tub.

What To Be Bring :- Good shoes, Warm Cloths, Rain Proof jacket, Two extra pairs of Cloths, Personal Medicine, Torch Light, Small knife, Camera(Optional), Sun Screen Lotion, Sun Glass, Small bag Day sack.
